ELEVATE YOUR AT HOME WORKOUT
Whilst the world adapts to its new norm, and fitness studios slowly start to reopen, we must admit that we’re actually pretty happy continuing to work out from the comfort of our own homes, to be completely honest.
After all, there is something JUST so fabulous about getting hot, sweaty and out of breath without even having to leave your bedroom. Travelling to the gym seems a distant memory when you can move your body to the sound of your instructor’s voice simply by joining a zoom meeting or Instagram live.
For some, the opposite is true, and the magic truly happens when around others who are just as sweaty, likeminded and focused on getting out alive as you are. So much so that working out alone, at home, proves a little tricky.
So here are a few our of favourite, tried and tested ways to elevate your WOFH (workOUT from home).
PAY FOR IT
Just as paying for a gym membership or buying a SoulCycle class gets your ass out the door, purchasing your home workout might give you the same motivation.
We love Peloton, and no, you don’t have to go full out and buy the bike to get involved (although we can honestly say, the bike is a truly worth every penny). The Peloton app has a huge database of floor, yoga and running workouts too. Other subscription platforms we're currently consuming include Alo Moves, P.volve, Shreddy and FIIT.
FLIP YOUR WHY AND MAKE IT A HABIT
Without sounding too woo woo, make sure you’re in it for the right reason. James Clear, author of Atomic Habits claims that the best way to form lasting habits is to start with an identity shift and build habits around the person that you want to be.
It’s also worth considering how your workouts make you feel and get to the bottom of why you’re doing them. Sorry, but for most people, “getting fit” isn’t enough to keep you going. Do you work out because it helps with your anxiety? Enables you to concentrate more? Allows you to have more energy to make it through your day? Dig deep.
CLOTHING + EQUIPMENT
At this point, there hasn’t been a day for a VERY long time that we haven’t thought twice about opting for leggings over jeans.
Sometimes, it can be as simple as peeling yourself into a new pair of leggings with a matching sports bra to elevate a home workout. Even if it’s just your cat who gets to witness your new assemble, it’s worth it if it makes you feel amazing.
On that note, if home workouts are going to be making a more permanent appearance in your #peakwellness protocol, then investing in some equipment that you actually WANT to use makes the world of good.
POST + PRE-WORKOUT SNACKS
The fun part. Depending on your workout, eat according to whether you require slightly more sustained energy, or if you’re repairing.
For high-intensity workouts and endurance exercises, we always recommend eating a little something beforehand. Whilst fasted workouts are pushed for their fat-burning superpowers, they can also act as huge stressors if your body is already stressed out. For yoga and lower intensity workouts, eating beforehand may not always be quite as essential.
When it comes to post-workout, we couldn’t think of anything worse than a watery, chalky protein shake. Instead, we opt for a thick and blood sugar stabilising smoothie, boiled eggs and avocado or a giant spoonful of nut butter. This looks different on everyone, but protein-focused is always the goal. And DON’T forget to stay hydrated!
Yes, the idea of home workouts is that you do them at home. But we’re women, and multi-tasking is our speciality, so getting that daily dose of vitamin D whilst getting your sweat on is just plain smart.
Head to your local park, your balcony or your back garden. Take your yoga mat, a skipping rope or simply just move your body.
GETAWAY FROM YOUR SO BUT TRY WORKING OUT WITH A FRIEND
Working out in front of your cat is one thing but working out with your SO in the corner of your eye can be really off-putting. Create a little WOFH space in a separate room, free from distractions.
On the other hand, working out WITH your SO or a friend is a game-changer, especially when you’re in it for the same reasons. Keep a tally of your workouts and if you stick to your routines, buy each other a #peakwellness inspired gift.
If you’re still struggling, consider the following: Is it the right type of workout for me? Is the playlist as good as it could be? Is the time of day optimal for me? All these things can influence your movement and even the smallest tweaks could completely transform your home workout.
