SMOOTHIE STAPLES TO MAKE YOU GLOW
Skin loving nutrients, adaptogens and supplements to kick your skin into gear and give you that ultimate highlighter glow from the inside out.
We swear, the rest of the recommendations won’t be as excessively #peakwellness as this one, but we like to start on a high.
Pearl powder is a thing. It can be added to smoothies, tonics or served to you on a platter by a little cherub as you simply just beam with health.
The benefits? Pearl contains a wonderful array of amino acids, all helping to maintain healthy collagen production in the skin and aid in repair throughout the body. It's also rich in numerous minerals such as magnesium, and antioxidants that are essential for healthy, glowing skin.
An absolute staple in our pantry; a big tub of collagen will serve you well.
Collagen aids in skin elasticity, structure and hydration. As we age, we produce less of it, so supplementing is a really great idea if you’re into those preventative measures as much as we are. The powder can also be used as your source of protein in your morning smoothie, which will help to balance blood sugar first thing, setting you up for success as the day goes on.
DARK LEAFY GREENS
At this point, you’re probably a little sick of hearing about the many benefits adding dark leafy greens to everything, but we’ll continue to shout about it anyway.
Dark leafy green vegetables are arguably one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet, and you absolutely should be adding them into every meal, anyway that you can.
Not only are they extremely fibrous, but they also contain b-vitamins, needed for energy production and optimal liver detoxification. They also contain skin-healthy minerals such as magnesium, calcium and iron, as well as oxidative stress-fighting antioxidants.
Add in a handful of fresh or frozen spinach OR pre-stream kale or chard then freeze, ready to be added to your morning smoothie. We promise you won’t even notice they’re there, but your skin absolutely will.
PROBIOTICS + PREBIOTICS
Establishing and maintain a healthy gut microbiome is the base for optimal health including balanced hormones, immunity and mental wellbeing. But in this context, giving your gut some love is fundamental for glowing skin.
Adding a source of prebiotic fibre, such as inulin or turkey tail mushroom powder, and / or a form of probiotic, live cultures including kefir or coconut yoghurt, are easy ways to support your gut first thing. You can also empty a probiotic capsule into your smoothie, or use kombucha as a liquid base. Get creative with it.
Let’s face it, adaptogens taste like crap.
The easiest way to down your daily dose of adaptogenic herbs is to throw them into a smoothie with a load of cacao and nut butter to cover the taste.
Adaptogens help the body adapt to stress and soothe the nervous system. They can both give you sustained energy and calm you down. As they are so supportive of the nervous system, they are a staple for healthy, glowing skin.
Consider ashwagandha, Rhodiola, maca or medicinal mushrooms, all great staples for hormonal balance and combatting any unfavourable side effects of chronic stress.
A QUALITY MULTI-GREENS POWDER
Always a good idea to keep a stash of powdered greens for those days when you’re running low on fresh veg, or when travelling.
Whilst we’re all for wholefoods first, a quality greens powder is a sure-fire way to get cram in vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients from several different plants.
There are a lot of fabulous brands on the market whose products we love and actually taste really great, especially considering its essentially powdered veg. We’ve listed our favourites below.
We can’t imagine a world where nut butter doesn't exist, and we don’t want to.
Almond butter, in particular, is a wonderful store cupboard staple to add to smoothies for healthy, glowing skin.
Not only will the fat content help to keep blood sugar levels lovely and stable, its high in vitamin E and magnesium, both skin health heroes, as well as other antioxidant compounds.
If you do have an allergy to nuts and are fine with coconut-based products, we also love coconut butter.
TURMERIC + GINGER
Two anti-inflammatory staples you might not have thought about adding to your morning smoothie. Whilst they both work effectively alone, we like to pair them together with a crack of black pepper and a dash of blood sugar stabilising cinnamon for a golden latte feel.
Berries including blackberries, blueberries and raspberries can be added to your smoothie for both taste and health benefits. They are high in anthocyanins, a polyphenol phytonutrient that combats oxidative stress and free-radicals, both of which can be damaging to the skin. Berries are also low in sugar and lovely and high in fibre.
A hydrating smoothie base with benefits, coconut water can be a great addition to your smoothie if your skin needs an extra boost in the AM.
It’s rich in multiple minerals (natures own electrolyte drink) and anti-oxidants. You can use it on its own in place of water or freeze into ice cubes, ready to be blended into your smoothie during the warmer months.
