KNOCK YOURSELF OUT: SUPPLEMENTS FOR SLEEP
If you’re reading this, there is already a pretty high chance that you’re clued up on sleep and its role in maintaining optimal health and wellness.
Putting sleep at the very top of your do-to list (yes, even above exercise and late-night Netflix binges) is arguably the single most effective way to support your body. From boosting immune function to stabilising blood sugar and improving insulin sensitivity, accelerating cognition and focus, to support your mental health. Sleep is also the MVP when it comes to muscle recovery.
Simply put, if you want to be an optimally functioning human, let alone an optimally functioning WOMAN, sleep makes the world a little easier to take on.
Whilst the best nights sleeps are a combination of consistent, healthy lifestyle habits, optimal levels of melatonin and calming neurotransmitters, along with a peaceful, not too hot and not too cold environment (there are several other contributing factors, but we’ll save that lecture for another day).
For many, the extra time spent indoors (and just general chaos) over the past few months has resulted in disrupted sleep patterns. If this is the case, if it's stressing you out and you’re even too ashamed to face your FitBit’s report each morning, there are a few nifty supplements and herbal remedies to help you out.
We’ve done the research so you don’t have to. Here are our favourite, tried and tested supplements for sleep, and thus, #peakwellness.
THE NUE. CO SLEEPY DROPS | £25-£40
Not only do we LOVE The Nue. Co because we are complete and utter suckers for good branding, but it's mostly down to the quality of their products. Any sleep supplement that contains valerian root, in our opinion, is a worthwhile purchase, due to the herbs natural sedative effects.
The Nue. Co recommends the blend is taken alongside magnesium, and we can really vouch for this.
- Catnip Herb Extract
- Chamomile Herb Extract
- Passionflower Herb Extract
- Valerian Root Extract
PUKKA HERBS NIGHT-TIME | £7.45
Pukka Herbs, best known for their tea, do a really fabulous range of herbal supplements. Cost-wise, they’re great if you’re looking to try a new adaptogen but are a little conscious of splashing out until you know if its right for you or not.
Their night-time sleep supplement is a good example of just that, containing valerian root, gotu kola leaf PLUS the oh so popular adaptogen ashwagandha, it’s the perfect place to start when venturing into adaptogenic territories. We've tried and tested this product and can confirm that alongside a cup of sleepy time tea, it knocks you right out.
- Valerian Root
- Gotu Kola Leaf
- Hawthorn Berry
- Nutmeg Friot
- Bhringarai Leaf
- Fennel Seed
FORM NUTRITION ZZZZS | £19
Form Nutrition produce some really effective products and in fact, we don’t know what we’d do without their Edge Nootropic (actually - we do, we’d be unfocused, unproductive messes). Their ZZZ sleep supplement, on the other hand, helps us chill the f out, particularly in the evenings when switching off proves a little tricky.
Their ingredients list is functional and highly effective, containing amino acids and precursors for calming neurotransmitters to help you drift off into a restful slumber.
ANATOME REST RELAX + SLEEP | £28
Another functional, science-based sleep supplement made from a combination of different calming amino acids and the ultimate relaxing mineral, magnesium. Anatome products not only look super sexy sitting within your supplement collection, but they really do provide amazing results.
- Magnesium Citrate
MOON JUICE DREAM DUST | £39
Back to the herbal blends, Moon Juice’s Dream Dust does exactly what it says on the pretty, reusable glass pot. Another one containing calming ashwagandha, known for its cortisol lowering properties and anti-stress properties, just what we need to aid our wind-down routines.
- Jujube Seed Powder
- Chamomile Flower Extract
- Schisandra Berry
- Polygala Root Extract
- Ashwagandha Root
A NOTE ON CBD
We couldn't write about optimal sleep and restorative rest without mentioning CBD. Widely used for anxiety, there have been studies done on the benefits of CBD for upping both the quality of sleep and the ease of drifting off. As with all of the supplements above, we recommend speaking with your health professional before taking.
